Understanding the Procedure

What is a colonoscopy and what can it detect?

A colonoscopy is a procedure where Dr. Earl examines your entire large intestine using a colonoscope — a flexible fiber optic scope equipped with a camera and light.

Dr. Earl can identify various problems in the colon, including early signs of cancer, inflamed tissue, ulcers, and bleeding. Additionally, polyps — which have the potential to develop into cancer — can be removed during the procedure.

Your Journey

A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Colonoscopy Experience

Before Your Colonoscopy

Before Your Colonoscopy

To conduct a thorough examination, the colon must be clean. Patients follow a low-residue diet the day before, then consume a liquid prep that cleans out the colon.

During Your Colonoscopy

During Your Colonoscopy

  • A gown will be provided for you
  • A nurse will start an IV and a soothing sedative will induce drowsiness or complete sleep
  • You will lie on your left side with knees drawn up
  • A Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will monitor you throughout
  • Air is introduced into the bowel for a clear view
After Your Colonoscopy

After Your Colonoscopy

After the procedure, you will be monitored until the sedation wears off. You'll need someone to drive you home. Most patients resume normal activities the next day. Dr. Earl will discuss the results with you before you leave.

What About Insurance?

If you have a private health insurance plan or Medicare, a screening colonoscopy is covered with no out-of-pocket costs as a preventative health service under the Affordable Care Act.

However, if during the screening the physician removes a polyp or performs a biopsy, the procedure may be considered "diagnostic" and therefore may not be covered as a screening exam. In these cases, insurance companies may transfer the financial responsibility to the patient.

Typically, a colonoscopy will result in the patient being billed by 4 different entities:

  • The physician's office
  • Surgery center or hospital
  • Anesthesia group
  • Pathology group

With our all-inclusive $1,275 cash price, there are no hidden charges. No separate bills. No surprises.
